Contestant Information

2008 Harmonica Contest Rules (NEW!):
 

• Harmonica only (any brand or type of harmonica is permitted).

• Any musical style, but must have a recognizable melody.

• No "trick" microphones, electronic or other accompaniment.  (Sound system is provided.)

• All contestants play one song not to exceed 5 minutes.

• Youth Division is open to those 17 years of age or younger.

• Adult Division is open to those 18 years of age and over, making less than 1/2 their income from playing harmonica.

• Open Grand Champion Division is open to anyone, amateur and professional alike.

• Contestants may enter only one division.

(Contestants will not be judged this year on the old categories of Solo Diatonic, Solo Chromatic, and Duo/Trio/Group.)

  
Judging:

Youth and Adult Divisions will be judged by individuals from the Open Grand Champion Division.

Open Grand Champion Division contestants will be judged by vote of the entrants.  Each entrant will vote for 1^st (10 points), 2^nd (7 points), and 3^rd (4 points).  (No entrant will vote for him/herself.)  Winners will be determined by total points.  Entrants will be given a score card with all contestants listed.
    

Prizes and Registration Fees:

Guaranteed prizes (and contest entry fees)...

• Youth Division (17 yrs and under):
         Entry Fee:  $20 before July 15; $30 thereafter
         Prize:          1^st - $100; 2^nd - $75; 3^rd - $50

• Adult Division (18 yrs and over):
         Entry Fee:  $35 before July 15; $45 thereafter
         Prize:          1^st - $250; 2^nd - $100 - 3^rd - $75
         --------------

Prizes dependent on number of contestants...

• Open Grand Champion Division (no restrictions on entrants):
         Entry Fee:  $50 before July 15; $60 thereafter
  
  Prizes:        
         1 - 5 contestants:  1^st place pays $500
          6 - 10 contestants:  1^st = $750
         11 - 15 contestants:  1^st = $750, 2^nd = $500
         16+ contestants:  1^st = $750, 2^nd = $500, 3^rd = $250

(Trophies awarded to 1^st, 2^nd, and 3^rd place winners in each category regardless of number of contestants.)

2008 Crowd Pleaser Contest:

Entrants will see two changes to this extremely popular segment of our festival. Prize money is being increased to $125, and each entrant will pay a modest $5.00 fee for each performance (you may perform individually only once but may perform with additional groups).  Entrants sign up on a first-come basis until all time slots are full.  Performance times will be assigned by drawing and posted one hour before the first performance.  Each performer or group will be allowed 10 minutes (this includes setup time).  Amps and microphones will be provided.

There will be a winner determined on Friday and Saturday night by audience vote.  Winner(s) will receive $125 that will be awarded at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.  Winners will perform at the awards ceremony following.
